I have done both (though I prefer the deployment side); and I firmly believe the best solutions for a customer are ones informed by real world experience.

Too often I have seen proposed solutions (and implemented them) that were more reflective of whatever had the best margins that quarter vs. what the customer needed and had the expertise to operate.
